Shanghai Disneyland expansion on track

Shanghai Disneyland is preparing to begin trials of several attractions in its new Spider-Man themed area, which is the ninth themed zone in the amusement park and its third expansion since first opening, Shanghai Disney Resort announced on Sunday (16/8).

The Worldwide Engineering Brigade, or “W.E.B.”, will make its debut in Shanghai when the park opens its new Spider-Man themed area, according to resort officials.

The W.E.B. facility, designed as a state-of-the-art research and development centre where Marvel heroes, inventors and engineers work together to develop and test disruptive technology, will immerse visitors in a Spider-Man adventure centred on creativity and advanced engineering.

The resort’s expansion efforts, however, are not limited to the Spider-Man project. Several other projects being planned include an update to the “Soaring Over the Horizon” attraction, which is the park’s flagship ride, two new themed hotels adjacent to the park, and a residential complex for staff designed to support frontline employees in delivering unforgettable experiences for guests.

Since opening in June 2016, Shanghai Disneyland has welcomed more than 100 million guest visits as of the end of October 2025.

In 2011, when construction of Shanghai Disney Resort first began, Shanghai received 230 million domestic visitors and generated tourism revenue of approximately 278.6 billion yuan (1 yuan = Rp2,651).

By 2025, the number of domestic visitors had increased to 416 million, while tourism revenue reached 566.68 billion yuan, according to local culture and tourism authorities.

The surge in inbound tourism to China, driven by the expansion of visa-free entry policies, has further boosted visitor numbers at Shanghai Disneyland, particularly among visitors from Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asian countries.
