Shallow Cianjur Earthquake Reported Felt in Bandung and Cibubur

A magnitude 4.3 earthquake shook the Cianjur region, West Java, on Tuesday (1/9) afternoon.

According to reports from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the tremors were felt in Sukabumi, Ciandu, Bandung, and Cibubur (East Jakarta).

“Based on reports from the community, this earthquake was felt in the Cianjur area with an Intensity Scale of III - IV MMI (felt by many people indoors during the day); in the areas of Sukabumi City, Cibadak, Nagrak, Warung Kondang, Cimahi, and Cilaku with an Intensity Scale of II - III MMI (vibrations felt clearly inside houses, similar to a passing truck); and in Bandung City, Cibubur, and Sukaraja with an Intensity Scale of II MMI (vibrations felt by some people, causing light hanging objects to sway),” stated the Head of BMKG Region II South Tangerang, Hartanto, in a BMKG press release.

“However, up to this point, there have been no reports regarding building damage as a result of the earthquake,” he added.

The earthquake’s epicentre was located in the Cianjur Regency, West Java, at approximately 17:53 WIB.

“BMKG analysis shows that this earthquake has updated parameters with a magnitude of M 4.3. The epicentre is located at coordinates 6.91 LS and 107.10 BT, specifically on land at a distance of 10 km Southwest of Cianjur Regency, West Java, at a depth of 4 km,” it was reported.

“Considering the location of the epicentre and the depth of the hypocentre, the earthquake that occurred is a shallow earthquake resulting from active fault activity,” he added.

As of 18:15 WIB, BMKG monitoring has not shown any aftershock activity.
