Shallow 4.7 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes West Sulawesi

A shallow earthquake shook the southern region of Polewali Mandar Regency, West Sulawesi, on Thursday morning. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the tremor occurred at 09:09 WITA with a preliminary magnitude of 4.7. Analysis by the BMKG indicates the epicentre was located at sea, approximately 50 kilometres south of Polewali Mandar, with a hypocentre at a depth of 13 kilometres below sea level. Impact mapping shows the shaking was felt at an intensity of III-IV MMI in Majene Regency, Polewali Mandar, and Pare-pare City. The vibrations were also reported at an intensity of II-III MMI across Sidrap Regency, Mamuju, Pangkep, Gowa, and Makassar City. The BMKG stated that this parameter information is being disseminated to the public to encourage increased vigilance and caution regarding the potential for aftershocks.
