Shallow 4.0-Magnitude Earthquake Again Shakes Sigi, Central Sulawesi

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that an aftershock with a magnitude of 4.0 and a depth of 4 kilometres again shook Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi. The shallow earthquake occurred at around 20.47 WIB and was clearly felt by the public, said Djati Cipto Kuncoro, Head of the BMKG Palu Class I Geophysics Station, in Palu on Friday. He stated that the earthquake’s epicentre was located at coordinates 1.26 degrees South latitude and 120.31 degrees East longitude, precisely on land at a distance of 49 kilometres east of Sigi. Considering the location of the epicentre and the depth of the hypocentre, the earthquake was a shallow type resulting from activity on the Palolo Fault. He said that to date there have been no reports of damage caused by the tremor. Djati explained that this earthquake is part of an aftershock sequence from a previous major earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 on 16 June 2026 at 10.27 WIB. As of 26 June 2026 at 21.50 WIB, BMKG monitoring results showed that aftershock activity had been recorded 1,488 times, with the largest magnitude being 5.3.
