Sex workers get UN assistance

SEMARANG, Central Java: The United Nations Development Program will provide financial assistance to 50 sex workers and street children here to enable them to set up small businesses, an executive of a social organization said.

The assistance, in the form of working capital amounting to Rp 1 million for each recipient, would be disbursed through the Central Java chapter of the Indonesian Family Planning Association, Antara reported.

The chapter's executive director, Farid Husni, said on Wednesday that the recipients would consist of 20 prostitutes and 30 street children.

"They will be trained on how to run businesses before being given the assistance," Farid said.

Farid said there were about 200 sex workers and 1,305 street children in Semarang.
