Sex workers get UN assistance
SEMARANG, Central Java: The United Nations Development Program
will provide financial assistance to 50 sex workers and street
children here to enable them to set up small businesses, an
executive of a social organization said.
The assistance, in the form of working capital amounting to Rp
1 million for each recipient, would be disbursed through the
Central Java chapter of the Indonesian Family Planning
Association, Antara reported.
The chapter's executive director, Farid Husni, said on
Wednesday that the recipients would consist of 20 prostitutes and
30 street children.
"They will be trained on how to run businesses before being
given the assistance," Farid said.
Farid said there were about 200 sex workers and 1,305 street
children in Semarang.
