Severe Traffic Paralysis After Truck Strikes Tendean Footbridge, Alternative Routes Advised
Traffic in the Mampang Prapatan area of South Jakarta ground to a halt during the Tuesday morning commute after a towing truck carrying heavy equipment struck the pedestrian footbridge (JPO) on Jalan Raya Kapten Tendean at around 00:30 WIB. The severe congestion spread to the Kuningan intersection and the Warung Buncit area. To alleviate the persistent gridlock, the Traffic Directorate of the Metro Jaya Police deployed personnel from the early hours and prepared traffic engineering schemes and alternative routes for road users. Kompol Robby Hefados, Head of the Operational Analysis Sub-Directorate of the Metro Jaya Police Traffic Directorate, confirmed the obstruction and stated that efforts to evacuate the orange truck were still ongoing. The single accident was triggered by the negligence of the driver of the truck with registration number B 9077 UFU. The driver, who was en route to deliver the crane to the Attorney General’s Office, reportedly ignored the maximum load height limit because his concentration was divided by playing on his mobile phone. The heavy impact of the truck’s load severely damaged the bridge span, nearly separating it from its support pillars and endangering road users. To minimise risk, police diverted traffic. Vehicles coming from the direction of Hotel Mercure or Trans TV heading towards the Kapten Tendean Flyover were temporarily redirected. Motorists heading to the Senopati area were directed straight towards Jalan Mampang Prapatan Raya and asked to make a U-turn before re-accessing Jalan Kapten Tendean. The DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency urged motorists to avoid the Jalan Kapten Tendean area and utilise several alternative routes. The truck remained wedged under the bridge until this morning. The pedestrian bridge is now completely closed as its severely cracked condition endangers safety, drawing complaints from local residents who regularly use the facility.
