Severe Traffic Congestion on Main Cimahi Roads, Here's the Cause

Severe congestion has occurred on a number of main roads in Cimahi City as a result of the construction of the Gatot Subroto Underpass and repairs to a bridge in the city government area on Jalan Raden Demang Hardjakusumah.

The two infrastructure projects have forced motorists to seek alternative routes. During the construction period, both roads have been temporarily closed since 19 August 2026 for approximately three months.

Traffic management implemented by officers on the first day of the project actually caused congestion at several points. Vehicles were barely able to move, especially during the morning and evening rush hours.

Based on the evaluation results, the Cimahi City Transportation Agency (Dishub) then adopted a policy of implementing a two-way system on Jalan Sriwijaya, precisely in the Underpass Dustira area.

“Because the first day yesterday experienced quite severe congestion, the results of our evaluation led to the opening of a lane at Underpass Dustira,” said Head of Cimahi Dishub, Endang, on Thursday (20/8).

According to Endang, the opening of two-way traffic at Underpass Dustira provides an alternative for motorists from Jalan Gatot Subroto who wish to head to the southern part of Cimahi City or Baros.

“People heading to the southern region no longer have to pile up on Jalan Gatot Subroto then Pasir Kumeli, or take a relatively long route to Padasuka or Cimindi,” he said.

However, not all types of vehicles are permitted to pass through the route. Large vehicles, such as buses and trucks with many axles, are still diverted to other routes due to tonnage restrictions at Underpass Dustira.

“For vehicle restrictions, large buses and trucks with many axles are not allowed to flow through here. So only medium and small trucks are allowed because of the tonnage restrictions at Underpass Dustira,” he said.

To help ease congestion, Cimahi City Dishub has also increased personnel at several intersections that frequently experience congestion. These include Simpang Sangkuriang, Alun-alun Cimahi, and Simpang Daeng or Simpang Cihanjuang.

Meanwhile, regarding public complaints about the simultaneous implementation of two projects, Cimahi Mayor Ngatiyana said that the construction of the Gatot Subroto Underpass uses budget assistance from the West Java Provincial Government.

He stated that the assistance must be realised through project implementation this year. If it is not implemented, the assistance may not be obtained again in the coming years.

As for the bridge repair in the Cimahi City Government area, it is considered very urgent because the bridge has experienced subsidence.

If it is postponed again, Ngatiyana continued, the condition is feared to become increasingly dangerous for road users, especially when the rainy season arrives.

“We understand that the simultaneous implementation of these two works causes inconvenience and impacts traffic flow. Therefore, the traffic management implemented will continue to be evaluated and adjusted to conditions in the field,” he explained.
