Several Villages in Sumenep Hit by Extreme Drought and Clean Water Crisis
The Sumenep Police force in East Java has started distributing clean water aid to several villages affected by extreme drought this dry season. The move is a form of social commitment by the police to ease the burden on communities struggling to access clean water.
Sumenep Police Chief AKBP Anang Hardiyanto stated that the aid distribution was based on area identification results. Sumenep Regency is known as one of the regions in East Java with high vulnerability to drought disasters each year.
“We felt compelled to help residents. Based on our identification, Sumenep always experiences clean water shortages during the dry season. This aid comes from voluntary donations by members of the Sumenep Police,” said AKBP Anang in Sumenep on Tuesday (23/6/2026).
The clean water distribution activity is also part of the series of events commemorating the 80th Bhayangkara Day. Beyond being a humanitarian action, the programme aims to strengthen synergy between the Indonesian National Police and the community in maintaining public security and order.
The distribution is carried out collaboratively with the Social Affairs Agency and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Sumenep Regency. The initial distribution began on Sunday (21/6), targeting Larangan Barma Village in Batuputih Sub-district, and will continue to other vulnerable villages.
Based on data from the Sumenep Regency BPBD, there are 70 villages spread across 19 sub-districts that routinely experience a clean water crisis during the dry season. To address this, the Sumenep Regency Government has also prepared long-term mitigation measures.
In addition to police assistance, the Sumenep Regency Government is cooperating with the Regional Drinking Water Company (PDAM) and engaging the private sector through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes to ensure the clean water supply is maintained for residents in need.
“We want the slogan ‘Police for the Community’ to truly be felt through real actions that touch the basic needs of residents,” concluded AKBP Anang.
