Several Regions Set for Heavy Rainfall Ahead of Lunar New Year, BMKG Urges Flood Vigilance
Several regions across Indonesia are expected to experience heavy rainfall on Monday, 16 February 2026, just one day before Lunar New Year, according to weather forecasts from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
BMKG has urged the public to heighten their vigilance against potential extreme weather that could disrupt daily activities and Lunar New Year celebrations.
BMKG forecaster Bintari, in a weather forecast broadcast via the agency's YouTube channel in Jakarta, stated that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in several areas of Sumatra, including Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Bengkulu, Bangka Belitung and Lampung. Banten is also among the potentially affected regions.
"Heavy and very heavy rainfall also has the potential to hit Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, North Sulawesi, Papua and Highland Papua," Bintari said.
BMKG emphasised that the potential for heavy rain needs to be anticipated, particularly by those planning Lunar New Year homecoming trips, shopping for celebration supplies, or attending prayers at temples.
Beyond heavy rainfall, BMKG also forecast moderate to heavy rain in several other major cities. Areas on alert include Pekanbaru, Tanjung Pinang, Padang, Palembang, Bandar Lampung, Yogyakarta and Banjarmasin, which may experience rain accompanied by thunderstorms.
Meanwhile, moderate rainfall is forecast for Medan, Bengkulu, Serang, Jakarta and Bandung. Light rain is expected in Banda Aceh, Jambi, Pangkal Pinang, Semarang, Surabaya, Pontianak, Tanjung Selor, Samarinda and Palangkaraya.
For eastern Indonesia, moderate rain is forecast in Gorontalo, Manado, Ternate and Jayawijaya, whilst light rain is expected in Denpasar, Mataram, Kupang, Ambon, most of Sulawesi and much of Papua.
BMKG has urged the public to remain alert to the potential for lightning and strong winds accompanying the rain, as well as secondary impacts such as waterlogging, flooding and fallen trees. Up-to-date weather information can be monitored through the official BMKG website at www.bmkg.go.id and through the agency's official social media channels to ensure plans ahead of Lunar New Year remain safe and smooth.
