The regulations regarding smoke-free zones have been implemented in several museums under the auspices of the Museum and Cultural Heritage Public Service Agency (MCB) within the Ministry of Culture. This means smoking is now prohibited in specific museum locations.

The Head of Museum and Cultural Heritage, Indira Estiyanti Nurjadin, stated on Wednesday (3/6/2026) that the rules are already in effect at the Basoeki Abdullah Museum, the National Awakening Museum, the Youth Pledge Museum, the Museum of the Formulation of the Proclamation Text, the Indonesian Batik Museum, and the Presidential Museum - Balai Kirti. She added that the Sangiran Early Man Museum, the Borobudur Conservation Office, Borobudur Temple, Mendut Temple, and Pawon Temple had previously implemented these smoke-free zone regulations.

According to Nurjadin, the implementation of smoke-free zone regulations is part of an effort to provide healthy public spaces. “Museums and cultural heritage sites are spaces for learning, reflection, and community interaction. Therefore, a healthy and comfortable environment is an essential prerequisite for educational and preservation functions to operate optimally,” she said.

The Museum and Cultural Heritage Public Service Agency (MCB) is encouraging all its working units to implement smoke-free zone regulations consistently and sustainably. In conjunction with the 2026 World No Tobacco Day commemorations, the MCB organised training for museum managers regarding the implementation of these regulations. The training was conducted as part of an effort to ensure a healthy, safe, and comfortable environment across all MCB working units.
