Several Buses at Tanjung Priok Terminal Found Unroadworthy With Worn Tyres and Broken Glass

Jakarta — Tanjung Priok Terminal in North Jakarta has conducted vehicle safety inspections on intercity buses as part of preparations for the 2026 Lebaran exodus period.

Sandi, head of Tanjung Priok Bus Terminal, stated that inspections were carried out on vehicles scheduled to transport passengers during the exodus period.

“Our preparation at Priok involves conducting ramp checks from yesterday onwards to verify whether vehicles are roadworthy or not,” he told Kompas.com on Friday, 13 March 2026.

Sandi reported that a bus on the Merak–Klaten route was declared unroadworthy due to a non-functional speed control system (KPS), a worn right-front tyre, and a blocked emergency exit obstructed by passenger seats.

Additionally, a bus on the Baranangsiang–Sumenep route was deemed unroadworthy because it was missing two window breakers, had a worn left-rear tyre, and a blocked emergency exit.

“A Jakarta-Merak bus is unroadworthy due to a worn right-rear tyre and missing two window breakers,” he stated.

Two buses on the Jakarta–Sumenep route were also declared unfit for operation. One bus failed inspection due to a non-functional speed control system, a worn left-rear tyre, and a corroded passenger stairwell floor.

Another bus on the same route was unroadworthy because both rear tyres were worn and the emergency exit was blocked by passenger seats.

Sandi continued, noting that during inspections on Tuesday, 10 March 2026, officials examined six vehicles. Five were declared roadworthy, whilst one was found unroadworthy.

“A Jakarta-Sumenep bus failed because of a bald left-rear tyre, an expired fire extinguisher, and looseness in the steering system,” he said.

“A Jakarta–Madura bus is unroadworthy because the front windscreen is broken,” Sandi added.
