Several Areas in Jakarta to Go Dark Tonight
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has announced that lights will be turned off for one hour tonight, from 8.30pm to 9.30pm Western Indonesian Time, as part of an Energy Saving and Carbon Emission Reduction campaign to commemorate World Environment Day 2026.
“The hour of darkness is a symbol of our collective concern for the environment and the future of our city,” said Dudi Gardesi, Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, in a statement on Saturday (13/6).
The blackout will be implemented at several key points in the capital, including the National Monument (Monas), the Arjuna Wiwaha statue, the Welcome Monument at the Hotel Indonesia roundabout, the Pemuda statue, and the General Sudirman statue, as well as the City Hall complex. Several protocol and arterial roads will also be affected.
Gardesi said the initiative is intended to encourage the public to build energy-saving habits in their daily lives. He believes that collective action by the community will have a positive impact on the environment.
“We invite all residents to make energy conservation a part of their daily lifestyle for a healthier and more comfortable Jakarta for future generations,” he said.
The blackout is based on Governor’s Instruction Number 14 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Light Switch-Offs for Energy Saving and Carbon Emission Reduction.
A similar action was previously held on Saturday (25/4), which recorded electricity savings of up to 96.91 MWh with cost efficiencies amounting to Rp140,226,312. Gardesi noted that the initiative also contributed to reducing carbon emissions by 77.53 tonnes of CO2e.
“Through this simple action, we can help maintain environmental quality while saving energy,” he concluded.
