Seven US Experts Agree War Against Iran Would Be Extremely Dangerous

The United States stands once again on the brink of war with Iran. President Donald Trump has intensified pressure on Tehran to halt its nuclear programme by deploying an unprecedented large military fleet consisting of aircraft and warships to the Middle East, a show of force not seen in the region since the Iraq War.

The American Politico website surveyed seven experts to explore the potential advantages and risks of military action against Iran. They unanimously agreed that President Trump may be taking unpredictable risks that are considered more dangerous than his previous manoeuvres.

Ryan Crocker, the former US Ambassador to Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Syria, Kuwait, and Lebanon, expressed doubt that Iran would comply with Washington’s demands to halt uranium enrichment, restrict ballistic missiles, and cease supporting regional proxies. He argued that compliance with such demands would effectively spell the end of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Crocker, now a diplomatic and security affairs expert at the RAND Corporation, maintains that President Trump will not back down. If no agreement is reached with Iran, Trump will initiate military action, possibly limited initially, in an attempt to force Iran to accept a deal.

If that fails, Crocker added, Trump would expand operations by targeting Iran’s missile capabilities to weaken the regime, including its religious and military leadership. Should the regime collapse, Crocker predicts that unknown military officers would seize power and internal violence would escalate.
