Seven regions in Malut and Sulut on alert for potential tsunami
Manado - The Coordinator for Data and Information at the BMKG Manado Geophysics Station, Muhammad Zulkifli, stated that seven regions in North Maluku and North Sulawesi provinces are at risk and on alert for tsunamis. “Regions in North Maluku province at risk of tsunami alert include Ternate, Halmahera, and Tidore,” he said in Manado on Thursday. Regarding preparedness, for North Sulawesi province, this covers Bitung City, the southern part of Minahasa Regency, the southern part of South Minahasa Regency, and the southern part of North Minahasa Regency. Furthermore, areas on alert for potential tsunamis include the Sangihe Islands, the northern part of North Minahasa Regency, and the southern part of Bolaang Mongondow Regency. “The public is urged to remain calm and not be influenced by unverified rumours,” he said. “Check and ensure that your residential buildings are sufficiently earthquake-resistant, or that there is no damage from earthquake vibrations that endangers the building’s stability before returning to the house,” he added. He hopes that the public will ensure that official information comes only from BMKG, disseminated through verified official communication channels. The magnitude 7.6 earthquake that occurred in the waters of Bitung, North Sulawesi and North Maluku, on Thursday at 06:48 WITA, was strongly felt in Manado City.
