Seven Ministers Issue Guidelines for AI Utilisation in Education
The Indonesian Government has released national guidelines for the utilisation of digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in the education sector. The guidelines are formalised in a Joint Ministerial Decree (SKB) signed by seven ministers at the office of the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture on Thursday, 12 March 2026.
The decree establishes guidelines for the use of digital technology and AI in learning processes across formal, non-formal, and informal education pathways. The seven ministries that signed the decree are the Ministry of Internal Affairs; Ministry of Religious Affairs; Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education; Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology; Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs; Ministry of Population and Family Development; and the Ministry for the Empowerment of Women and Child Protection.
The Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Pratikno, stated that the guidelines have been developed to ensure the use of digital technology and AI in education benefits the learning process whilst minimising potential risks to students.
According to Pratikno, the utilisation of such technology is also adapted to the readiness of students at each education level. The higher the education level, the broader the scope for using digital technology and AI in the learning process.
“The higher the education level, the greater the scope for technology utilisation that can be applied more broadly and flexibly,” said Pratikno.
For the Ministry of Higher Education, he noted, the policy forms part of efforts to strengthen the transformation of higher education in responding to increasingly rapid digital technology development. Universities are encouraged to utilise digital technology and AI responsibly to support learning innovation, strengthen research, and advance the development of knowledge and technology.
This step aligns with the policy direction of Diktisaintek Berdampak, which emphasises the tangible contribution of higher education to society through strengthened research, innovation, and improved quality of Indonesia’s human resources.
