Seven killed in landslide

WONOSOBO, Central Java: A land slide triggered by incessant rain killed at least seven people, seriously injured another five and wrecked four houses Saturday, a report said yesterday.

Among those buried alive were a one-month-old baby, a nine- year-old girl and an 18-year-old woman.

Quoting eyewitnesses, Antara reported that the disaster occurred between 5:15 p.m.and 9.45 p.m. Saturday. The mud that buried the houses was 60 meters long, 30m wide and 40m high.

Search and rescue workers managed to pull the bodies free about 11 a.m. Sunday after digging a 10m hole, the report said.

"We heard a thunderous sound and saw the hill crumble. We ran out of the house to find safe ground amid the heavy rain," a survivor said.

Survivors were accommodated in a village hall and the local government has provided Rp 39 million ($4,300) in relief aid for the victims. (pan)
