The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Pidie Regency, Aceh Province, has confirmed that seven residents died after being struck by a falling tree on the Banda Aceh-Medan national road in the Tanjong Krueng area, Sigli City. The incident occurred on Tuesday, 11 August, at approximately 9:00 PM local time. Nasruddin, Head of the Fire and Rescue Division at the Pidie BPBD, stated that the large kedondong tree fell across the road, crushing the open-bed truck carrying the victims. The deceased were identified as Zubaidah (60), Nurmawati (50), Rapasah (55), Patimah Wati (47), Salbiah (68), Zainabon (64), and Halimah (68). All victims were residents of Gampong Puli Seke, Pidie District. In addition to the fatalities, five other people sustained injuries, including to the neck and head, with one reported to be in a coma. The incident began as the truck was travelling along the national road. The large tree, believed to be old and suffering from root decay, suddenly collapsed onto the vehicle. The BPBD was alerted and dispatched personnel to the scene to evacuate the victims and clear the tree debris to facilitate the rescue operation. The agency is continuing to monitor the condition of those receiving medical treatment. Nasruddin urged the public to remain vigilant when passing through areas with large trees, especially during poor weather conditions when the risk of falling trees is heightened.
