JAKARTA - Ahead of Nyepi celebrations falling on 19 March 2026, thousands of inmates have received remission or sentence reductions. The Head of the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections for the Special Capital Region, Heri Azhari, stated that seven Hindu inmates in Jakarta who met the requirements were granted Nyepi remission. “The sentence reductions are given to inmates and convicted prisoners who have behaved well during their imprisonment and are provided at certain times such as religious holidays and general remission in commemoration of the religious proclamation of the Republic of Indonesia,” Heri said when met at the Class I Cipinang Detention Centre in East Jakarta on Wednesday (18/3/2026). The granting of special Nyepi 2026 remission is based on the Decree of the Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Services Number Pas 441 PK 0503 of 2026 dated 19 March 2026. Meanwhile, the total number of inmates across Indonesia receiving remission on this Nyepi occasion is 1,506 people. Of the 1,506 inmates who received remission, four of them were immediately released and are in Bali. The remission granted varies depending on the inmate’s behaviour during their time in prison. However, the maximum remission given is two months.
