Seven Indonesian Regions Hit by Tsunami Following Philippine Earthquake

Seven regions in Indonesia were struck by tsunami waves following a massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake that shook southern Mindanao, Philippines. The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) noted that tsunami waves were detected in North Maluku, North Sulawesi, and Central Sulawesi, with the highest wave reaching 0.75 metres in Talakan.

As of Monday (8/6/2026), BMKG recorded tsunami activity at seven monitoring points. The first three locations detected to be affected were Kedi in North Maluku, Ulu Siau, and Melonguane. The tsunami height in Kedi was recorded at 0.09 metres, Ulu Siau at 0.18 metres, and Melonguane at 0.19 metres.

“Tsunami waves have been detected in Kedi, North Maluku (07:20 WIB) at 0.09 m, Ulu Siau (07:27 WIB) at 0.18 m, and Melonguane (07:27 WIB) at 0.19 m,” BMKG stated.

Four other regions followed. BMKG subsequently reported that tsunamis were also detected in Tahuna (North Sulawesi), Paleleh (Central Sulawesi), Tanjung Sidupa (North Sulawesi), and Talengan (North Sulawesi). The tsunami height in Tahuna reached 0.30 metres, Paleleh 0.45 metres, Tanjung Sidupa 0.32 metres, and Talengan 0.75 metres. Of all the affected areas, Talengan recorded the highest tsunami wave.
