Seven drown in two days

SEMARANG, Central Java: Seven people drowned in pools and rivers in three Central Java towns and one village on Saturday and Sunday, officials said on Monday.

In the town of Demak, the bodies of Juida, 70, and Kasminah, 60, were found floating in a pool in the backyard of their house on Saturday.

Police believe the two slipped into the pool. The other five incidents occurred on Sunday.

Marsinah, 55, was found dead floating in her neighbor's pool. Police saw no signs of a struggle and are for the moment assuming her death to be an accident.

In the city of Semarang, locals discovered the body of Sumadi, 45, floating in a flood canal. He had been missing since Saturday.

In Surakarta, four-year-old Adytia Rizki Pangestu was found dead in a public swimming pool, Tirtomoyo Manahan Surakarta.

And Mugiyono, 45, and 11-year-old Novi Wulandari, both from the village of Bandengan in the regency of Grobogan, drowned in a flash flood. -- JP
