Seven die as truck overturns

JEPARA, Central Java: An open truck packed with supporters of a local volleyball team overturned on Sunday in Mambak village, Mlonggo district, killing seven and injuring 46.

Antara reported yesterday that the truck, driven by Priyanto, was speeding to a match in Bantrung village, Batealit district. Priyanto lost control of the truck when he tried to dodge a van coming from the opposite direction.

Everybody on board the truck was killed or injured. Thirty- nine people, who were seriously injured, have been taken to a hospital here or to a hospital in nearby Kudus. Seven others, including the driver, sustained only light injuries.

Among the dead were Sugiono, 18, Sobirin, 14, Tarmuji, 18, Suhat, 65, Utomo, 13, Nuralim, 16, Kasnoto, 16, and Sastro, 18. Sobrin and Tarmuji were brothers. (swe)
