Seven Causes of Itchy Armpits, from Irritation to Cancer

Itchy armpits can disrupt daily activities and dent confidence. While often dismissed as a cleanliness issue caused by sweat, the discomfort in this fold region is a signal from the body about health conditions requiring appropriate attention. The anatomy of the armpit is unique due to its concealed position, rubbing together, and tendency to stay damp. Beneath the skin of the armpit is a crossroads including lymph nodes, blood vessels, and nerves. “Just by its location, you can easily have problems, because this is skin that touches skin. We call it the intertriginous area,” says Dr. Friedman. “The skin in the armpit is also typically a bit thinner, more sensitive, and exposed to many things,” notes the dermatologist at Weill Cornell Medicine, Dr. Jack Levy. The most common sign of itching in the armpit is irritant contact dermatitis, an inflammation that damages the skin’s natural protective barrier. This condition is typically triggered by various things that directly contact the area daily. Factors such as friction from tight clothing during exercise, detergent residues on fabric, body wash, and the widespread use of underarm lightening products can trigger this inflammatory redness issue. “Anyone can suffer this rash in response to external substances or substances produced internally,” says Dr. Friedman. This reaction causes slow inflammation that usually manifests as a rash within several hours to dozens of hours after skin is exposed to fragrance contents, dyes, or metal components in deodorant products. “Only people whose skin is sensitive to a substance experience it. It is usually a very itchy rash resembling plant poisoning,” Dr. Friedman explains. Sudden itching with no exposure to chemical products can signal an underlying disease. Eczema often affects skin folds and presents very dry, flaky patches and itchy skin prone to flare-ups due to weather changes or stress.
