Setu Babakan Redevelopment Begins, Seven Traders Await Verification
Redevelopment of the Setu Babakan area in South Jakarta has begun following the removal of stalls nearby. However, several traders are still staying put while they await verification concerning the status of the land assets where they operate.
“Of the 216 traders at Setu Babakan, action has in principle been taken in every case. There are still seven traders who have not yet been dealt with because we need to confirm the status of the assets involved,” South Jakarta Mayor Syafrin Liputo said after inspecting a fire site in Pela Mampang, South Jakarta, on Friday (23 October 2026).
Syafrin said the government would follow up as soon as the verification was complete, so the sites could be arranged according to the plan.
“Once we have information about the status of the assets, further enforcement action will be taken, while we verify which assets the traders are currently occupying or using for their businesses,” he added.
Syafrin said the deadline for clearing the stalls had already passed. However, the outstanding verification was why some stalls had not yet been dismantled.
“The deadline has actually passed. The seven traders are still waiting for confirmation of the asset status and whether it corresponds with the assets recorded by the relevant regional government agency. The work is continuing,” he said.
Traders offered relocation
The South Jakarta Municipal Government has offered traders at Setu Babakan relocation to the Pasar Minggu market centre and Teras Lenteng Agung. The offer is for traders occupying stalls built over drainage channels or operating illegally at Setu Babakan.
“They have been offered space at the Pasar Minggu market centre. There are still many vacant units behind the bus terminal—about 250 kiosks. They have also been offered space at Teras in Lenteng Agung, which previously accommodated bird traders from Barito,” South Jakarta Public Order Agency chief Nanto Dwi Subekti said by telephone on Wednesday (7 October).
Nanto said some traders had already moved to a designated stall area at a site within Setu Babakan. The remaining traders would then be offered places elsewhere.
“As part of the redevelopment, the South Jakarta Municipal Government has also prepared two relocation sites for affected traders. The Setu Babakan Management Unit area, specifically Zone B/Abdul Rahman Saleh Campus, has capacity for around 57 to 63 stalls,” he said.
