Settlers face water crisis

PALEMBANG, S. Sumatra: Four resettlement areas on the coast of South Sumatra are facing water crisis, Antara said yesterday.

Representatives of the settlement communities in Rimau Island, Musi Banyuasin, Air Sugihan and Ogan Komering Ilir were in Palembang seeking official assistance.

The water was salty and many children had fallen ill, they told the news agency.

To obtain fresh water, they had to travel long distances, often using a barge, or buy water.

Director General for Guidance of the Ministry of Transmigration, Wibowo, who was in Palembang yesterday, expressed concern.

He said the ministry had given orders to all its offices in the region to anticipate water crisis

"I'm going to order the head of the South Sumatra Transmigration Office to inspect and send assistance," he said. (09)
