Jakarta – On 1 March 2026, the Fire and Rescue Service (Damkarmat) celebrated its 107th anniversary. This milestone serves as a reminder of the long-standing dedication of firefighters in protecting the public from fire hazards and other emergency situations.

Under the theme “Serving for National Safety,” this year’s commemoration reaffirmed Damkarmat’s commitment to remain at the forefront of life and property-saving efforts.

Safrizal ZA, Director General of Regional Administration at the Ministry of Interior, stated that the 107-year milestone represents more than just a number but reflects Damkarmat’s extended journey of service to the nation.

“The theme ‘Serving for National Safety’ reminds us that the task of firefighters extends beyond extinguishing fires but also encompasses providing protection and security to the public,” Safrizal said on Sunday, 1 March 2026.

“During this Ramadhan season, the spirit of service is increasingly understood as an act of worship and genuine concern for fellow citizens,” he added.

This year’s Damkarmat anniversary coincided with the holy month of Ramadhan. The sense of solidarity and spirit of service were particularly pronounced, aligned with the values of sincerity, patience, and social compassion that characterise Ramadhan.

Throughout the fasting month, Damkarmat personnel maintained 24-hour vigilance, ensuring rescue services continued uninterrupted for public safety.

Safrizal noted that Damkarmat’s role has become increasingly complex given rising urban risks and dynamics. Beyond fire management, Damkarmat is now involved in non-fire rescue operations, including evacuations, disaster victim assistance, dangerous animal handling, and various community emergencies.

He emphasised that strengthening human resource capacity, equipment modernisation, and enhanced cross-sector coordination remain important priorities for strengthening rescue services regionally.

Local governments were also urged to continue increasing budget allocations and infrastructure support for fire and rescue units.

“The 107th anniversary is expected to serve as a moment of reflection and motivation for all Damkarmat personnel across Indonesia to continue improving service quality, in line with the spirit of serving for national safety,” Safrizal concluded.
