Services Continue at Dr. Soetomo Hospital After Fire
Operational services at the Dr. Soetomo Hospital in Surabaya are confirmed to continue normally after the fire at the Integrated Heart Center building on Friday (15/5/2026) morning.
The Director of Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Cita Rosita Sigit Prakoeswa, affirmed that they immediately made operational adjustments in the areas affected by the fire at Dr. Soetomo Hospital to ensure that patients’ rights to receive care were not disrupted.
“We ensure that hospital services continue with operational adjustments in several affected areas and conduct a thorough evaluation of the hospital’s safety and security systems,” said Cita in her official statement in Surabaya.
The fire was first detected in the PPJT building of Dr. Soetomo Hospital at approximately 06:30 WIB. Within 30 minutes, the hospital immediately activated emergency response procedures by forming an Incident Commander who oversaw four main coordination lines:
The building’s internal protection system was initially used for initial firefighting before the Fire and Rescue Service (DPKP) and the Surabaya BPBD arrived at the location. This swift action successfully contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to other floors or buildings.
A total of 44 patients were successfully evacuated to several safe locations, including:
During the evacuation process during the fire at Dr. Soetomo Hospital, two patients in the ICCU unit received special attention due to their dependence on respiratory support (ventilators). Both were evacuated to the RES Resuscitation Room in the Emergency Department.
However, one patient was reported to have died during the stabilization process. The hospital explained that the patient was a referral patient post-heart surgery who was in critical condition, using a ventilator, and undergoing hemodialysis (blood washing).
“Our top priority is the safety of patients and staff. Currently, the situation at the scene has been declared safe and under control. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation by the authorities,” Cita concluded. (Ant/H-4)
