JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Several users of domestic helper (ART) services agree with the Domestic Workers Protection Act (PPRT) that sets the minimum age for domestic workers at 18 years old.

Like Farhan (42), who admits to preferring to employ domestic workers who are of mature age.

“Coincidentally, the worker at home is already in her forties. I specifically look for those who are a bit older or elderly because it feels more comfortable,” said Farhan in a conversation with Kompas.com on Wednesday (22/4/2026).

“Because the maid at home is neat in her work. She already knows what needs to be done without having to be told repeatedly,” he said.

He also admitted to feeling uncomfortable if he had to employ underage domestic workers.

“If they are still young under 18, there’s a sense of unease, pity, like feeling sorry for them. Even though they work consciously, and we pay them too. With this regulation, it’s clearer,” said Farhan.

The same sentiment was expressed by Clairaine (28), who feels more at ease if the domestic worker in her home is of mature age.

According to her, 18 years old is a reasonable limit because they are sufficiently mature both physically and mentally to work.

“If under that, I’m worried, it’s pitiful if they are still children having to work. Better 18 years and above, so they are more prepared and we as employers feel safe,” said Clairaine.

“For example, if we give work to a 17-year-old child. Then the neighbours might think we’re exploiting a young child,” said Clairaine.

Meanwhile, Lala (35) admits to preferring domestic workers who are over 18 years old.

For eight years using domestic worker services, Lala assesses that workers over 30 years old are more agile and experienced in working.

“Those who are 18 years and above usually understand the work better, more efficient too. We don’t have to worry too much about teaching from the very beginning,” said Lala.
