Serious Test in Reshaping Jakarta's Face, from Illegal Parking to Governance

In the Lebak Bulus area, near a busy transport hub, Jakarta is reflecting on its challenges. Illegal parking that has quietly proliferated on the road body has finally been regulated. However, behind this firm step lies a larger question: is this merely a temporary response, or the beginning of a genuine overhaul that addresses the root problems? Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta, Rano Karno, personally led the enforcement against illegal parking and street vendor (PKL) stalls in the area on Friday (24/4/2026). A combined force of 200 personnel was deployed to move motorcycles that had been blocking part of the road. Vehicles previously lined up in two rows on Jalan Kembang Lestari were relocated to the official parking lot owned by Perumda Sarana Jaya. Rano also reminded residents not to use the road body as parking space again. “I urge residents not to engage in illegal parking anymore, as it violates regulations, causes congestion, hinders public access, and is prone to crime,” said Rano. Not only illegal parking, but PKL stalls around the location were also regulated. Stalls standing under zinc roofs at the intersection of Jalan RA Kartini were deemed to obstruct access and pose dangers, given the high activity around the MRT station. “It’s not that entrepreneurship is forbidden; it is allowed, but we will prepare the place for it later,” Rano stated. This step has received appreciation from the Chair of the DPRD DKI Jakarta’s Special Committee on Parking Governance, Jupiter.
