KENDARI — A series of workplace accidents at PT Virtue Dragon Nickel Industry (VDNI) and PT Obsidian Stainless Steel (OSS) in Konawe over the past week have raised deep concerns. The Chairman of the Konawe branch of the National Workers' Union Federation (KSPN), Yopi Wijaya Putra, stated that these tragic incidents are not isolated events but rather the result of systemic problems within the companies' management.

Yopi pointed to weak management and poor working conditions as the primary cause of the successive accidents. He highlighted the increasing number of workplace accidents within a specific period as clear evidence of these problems. Critical aspects identified include weak leadership and field supervision, inadequate work standards, unfit working conditions, and a lack of corrective action following previous errors. The accumulation of these problems, he said, has triggered a domino effect resulting in a rising death toll.

KSPN Konawe has urged the management of PT VDNI and PT OSS to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of their management systems. They have called for the adoption of a holistic approach to creating a healthier and more productive working environment, including undergoing audits and certification under the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (SMK3).

Furthermore, KSPN Konawe has also urged the Southeast Sulawesi Provincial Manpower and Transmigration Office (Disnakertrans) to carry out transparent inspections and investigations and to take firm action should any violations of labour law be found to have contributed to the workplace accidents.
