Seribu Islands Regency Urges Resort Managers to Manage Waste at Source

The Environmental Sub-Department (Sudin LH) of the Seribu Islands Regency is urging all resort and private island managers in the area to begin managing waste at its source, thereby minimising waste production.

“Waste management must start at the source so that the amount of waste transported off the island can be reduced,” said Achmad Hariadi, Head of the Seribu Islands Regency Environmental Sub-Department, in Jakarta on Thursday.

He expressed hope that island managers would sort waste according to type. Organic waste such as food scraps can be processed into compost, while twigs and leaves are shredded so they can be beneficial to the environment.

“Mixed waste and residue are compressed, making transportation more efficient,” he said.

These simple measures have a significant impact on the environmental sustainability of the islands. In addition to reducing waste generation, source-level management also helps maintain the cleanliness of tourist areas and optimises the operation of waste vessels serving the Seribu Islands region.

According to Achmad, managing waste at the source reduces the volume of waste that must be transported.

“This makes the transportation process more efficient while supporting the creation of a clean, healthy, and sustainable island environment,” he said.

The appeal has been conveyed to the managers of Karang Beras Island, Air Island, Gusung Sekati Island, Semak Daun Island, and Gosong Pandan Island.

This policy is in line with Jakarta Governor Instruction Number 5 of 2026 concerning the Waste Separation and Processing from Source Movement, as well as Circular Letter Number e-0011/SE/2026 from the Head of the Jakarta Environmental Department.

Through collaboration between the government and area managers, it is hoped that the culture of sorting and processing waste can become part of daily life, so that the natural beauty of the Seribu Islands remains preserved for future generations to enjoy.
