Seribu Islands Regency introduces new icons for waste management education
The Seribu Islands Regency Government has introduced two environmental icons as a new innovation to educate the public on waste management and environmental cleanliness. Through the ‘My Island Zero Waste’ movement, two environmental icons named Bang Libra and Mpo Lisa have been prepared as campaign media that are closer and more easily accepted by residents and tourists, said Achmad Hariadi, Head of the Seribu Islands Environmental Sub-Department, on Friday. According to Achmad, the presence of these two icons is part of a more creative educational strategy to support the ‘My Island Zero Waste’ movement. The idea emerged from deliberations with residents of Panggang Island Urban Village, who wanted figures that could serve as reminders of the importance of sorting waste and maintaining environmental cleanliness. During the deliberation in Panggang Island Urban Village, residents agreed on the need for icons to remind the community to sort waste and keep the island clean. That is why we initiated Bang Libra and Mpo Lisa as environmental cleanliness ambassadors, Achmad explained. He added that Bang Libra and Mpo Lisa will be visualised as distinctive icons of the Seribu Islands, carrying various educational messages related to waste management. Their presence is expected to remind both residents and tourists to work together to maintain cleanliness. In addition to targeting the local community, the two icons will also be involved in activities welcoming tourists visiting the Seribu Islands. Through a more communicative and friendly approach, environmental messages are expected to be conveyed effectively to visitors. Meanwhile, Seribu Islands Regent Muhammad Fadjar Churniawan welcomed the initiative. He considers the educational approach through environmental icons to be an engaging way to cultivate a culture of environmental awareness within the community. Mpo Lisa and Bang Libra will greet residents and tourists while encouraging them to sort their waste. This is an interesting educational method so that the message of maintaining environmental cleanliness can be well received, Fadjar said. Through this innovation, the Seribu Islands Regency Government hopes that public awareness of waste management will continue to increase, resulting in a clean, comfortable, and waste-free island environment.
