Seribu Islands controls cat population through sterilisation programme

The Food Security, Marine and Agriculture (KPKP) Sub-agency of the Seribu Islands Regency is continuing efforts to control the cat population in the region through a sterilisation programme. A total of 108 cats on Pari Island underwent the procedure, according to officials. “Today, 108 cats in Pari Island Urban Village, South Seribu Islands District, have been sterilised,” said Sandri Oktama, Acting Head of the Animal Husbandry and Animal Health Section at the Seribu Islands KPKP Sub-agency, in Jakarta on Thursday. According to Sandri, the activity is a humane effort to control the cat population while simultaneously improving animal health in residential areas. Following the sterilisation and health checks, the cats are returned to their original habitat in a healthier condition. Of the total cats sterilised, 65 were female and 43 were male. Sandri added that the agency collaborated with the animal lover community “Let’s Adopt Indonesia” as a form of synergy between the government and the community to realise animal welfare and create a healthy and balanced environment. Pari Island Urban Village Head, Yusuf, said the programme benefits both the community and the wildlife living alongside them in the settlement. “This programme also raises public awareness about the importance of maintaining animal health and welfare. We hope activities like this can continue on Pari Island,” said Yusuf.
