Sergeant killed in road accident

JAKARTA (JP): A police sergeant was hit and killed yesterday morning as he helped a crash victim on a toll road in West Jakarta. His colleague was seriously injured.

Sergeant Supratman, 29, was helping Taleta, 49, out of her car on a road near Taman Anggrek Mall after her Kijang crashed into a Suzuki Carry minivan at 5 a.m.

A Daihatsu pickup truck appeared from behind and hit Supratman, a patrol officer.

His colleague, Sergeant Sukisman, 34, who was helping Supratman, received a serious head injury. As of late yesterday, he was still in a coma at Sumber Waras Hospital in Grogol.

An officer at PT Jasa Marga, the state-run toll road company, said the minivan came from the Tangerang toll road in the direction of the Cawang-Cengkareng toll road.

At an intersection of both roads the minivan made a U-turn and was hit by the Kijang van.

The pickup truck driver was also treated at the same hospital.

Supratman's body was taken to his hometown in Purworejo, Central Java, after a military service was held in his honor. (05)
