Serdang Market Reaches 50 Years of Age; Revitalisation Plans Prepared
Perumda Pasar Jaya will accelerate the revitalisation of Serdang Market, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, following a fire that destroyed two kiosks on Sunday (27/09/2026) night. The market, which has been operational since 1976, has been deemed in need of building and utility upgrades to enhance safety and support trading activities.
Topik Hidayatulloh, Manager of Corporate Communications and Protocol at Perumda Pasar Jaya, stated that the condition of Serdang Market, which is approximately 50 years old, is a key consideration in the revitalisation plan.
“This incident further strengthens the urgency of a comprehensive revitalisation plan to provide market infrastructure that is safer, more modern, and suitable for all parties,” said Topik on Wednesday (30/09/2026).
The fire occurred at approximately 21:35 WIB while security personnel were conducting routine patrols in the market area. Officers then heard shouts from traders notifying them of smoke billowing from one of the kiosks.
Security personnel and traders immediately rushed to the location and attempted to extinguish the flames using portable fire extinguishers (APAR). The fire was successfully brought under control at approximately 20:01 WIB after five fire extinguisher canisters were used.
“Security personnel and traders worked to extinguish the fire until it was controlled around 22:01 WIB. A total of five fire extinguisher canisters were used in the process,” said Topik.
There were no fatalities or injuries reported in the fire. The incident has been reported to the police, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Pasar Jaya will subsequently expedite the revitalisation plan to improve the physical condition and utilities of the market. In addition to the building’s age, which has reached nearly half a century, the building’s usage rights for Serdang Market expired in 2015.
Serdang Market has been operating since 1976. The market was originally an ‘Inpres’ market, established to relocate street vendors from the Jalan Bendungan Jago area.
Currently, Serdang Market stands on a land area of 5,482 square metres with a building area of approximately 4,195 square metres. The market comprises 671 active business units, consisting of 170 kiosks, 46 counters, 48 stalls, and 407 tents.
“The condition of the market infrastructure requires renewal and rearrangement to better suit current trading needs,” said Topik.
