Serbians Cheer as Ruling Party Suffers Defeat
Thousands of people celebrated in Belgrade, Serbia, after the political movement Student List managed to unseat Aleksandar Vučić on Tuesday (27 October 2026), local time.
Residents and students poured into the streets, singing, embracing and setting off fireworks to celebrate their victory in the parliamentary elections.
A tragedy, believed to have been linked to corruption and poor government oversight, prompted students to stage mass demonstrations.
The protests, which began in 2024, continued to grow, peaking on 15 March 2025 in Belgrade, where up to 325,000 people attended.
The victory marks a major political shift for the Balkan country.
Celebrations erupted after Aleksandar Vučić, who had been in power for 14 years, conceded that his party had lost to the opposition movement led by young people.
Over the past two years, Serbia’s political climate has been marked by tension. Student groups and civil society have continued to stage prolonged protests, university boycotts and marches between cities, calling for change.
