Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic Officially Resigns
Belgrade (ANTARA) - Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced his resignation from the presidency on Sunday (27/9), after signing official resignation documents.
Vucic’s supporters gathered outside the Serbian presidential office to express their support. Vucic subsequently emerged to deliver a brief speech to his supporters.
“Based on Article 116, Paragraph 5 of the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia, I hereby resign from the office of president of the republic,” Vucic stated before signing the document.
Before returning inside the building, Vucic also expressed his gratitude for the support received during his victories in the 2017 and 2022 Serbian presidential elections.
A new presidential election in Serbia must be held no later than the end of December.
Vucic is resigning just eight months before the end of his second term, which was scheduled to conclude in May 2027.
Prior to serving two terms as the President of Serbia, Vucic served as the Prime Minister of Serbia from 2014 to 2017. Under the Serbian constitution, Vucic is no longer eligible to run for the presidency.
As a result of his resignation before the end of his term, Serbia may hold legislative and presidential elections sooner than originally scheduled.
