Serang (ANTARA) - The Serang Regency Government in Banten is promoting the construction and optimisation of Reduce-Reuse-Recycle (3R) waste processing facilities across all sub-districts, as well as facilitating the establishment of waste banks in every village to address the area’s waste management challenges.

Serang Deputy Regent Muhammad Najib Hamas said on Thursday that waste management can no longer be carried out conventionally, but requires a systemic, integrated, and sustainable approach from upstream to downstream.

“This change represents a moment to strengthen waste management policies. We will strengthen regulations requiring sorting at source, whether from households, markets, industrial zones, or public facilities,” said Najib.

Najib explained that the Serang Regency Government will develop a dedicated integrated waste management programme for market areas and economic centres. The programme will encompass the provision of sorting infrastructure, scheduled collection services, and ongoing awareness campaigns for traders.

Regarding waste banks, he affirmed that these units form part of a management strategy to sort waste on an economic basis. This is expected to reduce the volume of waste entering final disposal sites (TPA).

“Through waste banks, we carry out empowerment and education for communities at the village level. Waste with economic value is sorted at the outset, so that not everything needs to be sent to the final disposal site,” he said.

Additionally, the Serang Regency Government is also planning to increase the construction of Integrated Waste Processing Facilities (TPST) in line with the rise in daily waste production. This measure also serves as an anticipatory step against the potential increase in waste volume from the Free Nutritious Meals Programme (MBG).

The local government is also targeting the delivery of a minimum of 500 tonnes of waste per day to an Environmentally Friendly Technology-Based Waste-to-Energy Processing facility (PSEL) as part of a strategic joint programme with Serang City and Cilegon.
