Serang City Square Revitalisation Budgeted at Rp 48 Billion, to Feature Golok Statue

The Serang city government has budgeted Rp 48.227 billion for the revitalisation of the city square. The plan includes an icon or statue of a golok (traditional Banten machete) as well as ready-to-drink water facilities at the Serang City Square.

As observed on Tuesday (11/8/2026), construction work has already begun. The entire square area, which is usually visited by residents, has now been closed off.

Several workers have started the construction process and heavy equipment has been deployed to facilitate the work. In addition, some of the old structures that previously stood on the site have been demolished.

According to the project signboard, the budget for this project amounts to Rp 48,227,815,000, sourced from the Serang City Regional Budget (APBD) for the 2025 fiscal year.

The Head of the Serang City Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (DPUPR), Iwan Sunardi, said the renovation covers both the West and East Squares. To facilitate the work, the project has been divided into four zones.

The first zone will function as a state ceremony field. The second zone will be a fountain area equipped with the Golok Banten icon as a symbol of the region’s cultural identity.

Meanwhile, the third zone is designed as a play area and public interaction space. The fourth zone will be equipped with a food court, tennis courts, and a more organised parking area.

“We have divided the work into four zones so that implementation is more measurable, progress is easier to monitor, and the contractor has clear guidance,” Iwan explained.

One of the facilities that will be a key attraction in the revitalisation is the provision of ready-to-drink water that the public can access free of charge. This facility is expected to be a new innovation in the management of public open spaces in Serang City.

“In developed cities, public spaces already have drinking water facilities that residents can use directly. Hopefully, Serang City Square will be the first to provide such a facility,” he said.
