Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Metropolitan Police Traffic Directorate revealed the sequence of events involving a driver with the initials HM (24) who was driving recklessly in the Central Jakarta area on Wednesday (25/2).

The Director of Traffic at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Kombes Pol Komarudin, explained that the vehicle was initially coming from the south, or from Senen, heading towards Pasar Baru.

“At the time of the incident, our officers who were on patrol noticed unusual behaviour from the driver amidst the congestion of the capital city in the afternoon,” he said.

Komarudin stated that the driver was driving the vehicle improperly, at high speed, and it was also discovered that the vehicle’s registration plate was not used as intended.

“Officers followed the vehicle and it made a U-turn in front of the Indonesian Navy Headquarters (Koarmada RI), then turned and entered Jalan Gunung Sahari 4,” he said.

Next, the driver entered the Jalan Gunung Sahari 5 road, which is known to be a one-way street, from west to east, or from the Indonesian Navy Headquarters to Bungur.

Upon arriving at the intersection of the Indonesian Navy Headquarters, the driver entered the right lane on Jalan Budi Utomo, where the driver clearly drove against the flow of traffic.

Subsequently, officers stopped the vehicle, and during the journey, the driver made another U-turn, heading back towards the Indonesian Navy Headquarters, possibly realising that the road he was driving on was against the flow of traffic.

“Upon arriving at the Indonesian Navy Headquarters, the driver turned left towards Gunung Sahari or towards Pintu Besi. There, officers continued to follow, and in the middle of the road, because the traffic light at Pintu Besi was red and many vehicles were queuing, the driver made another U-turn on the same lane,” said Komarudin.

As a result, officers from the Jakarta Central Metropolitan Police secured the driver of the vehicle with the initials HM (24).

“Currently, the driver and another person from the Toyota Cayla vehicle have been secured, and the vehicle has also been taken into custody,” said the Chief of the Jakarta Central Metropolitan Police, Kombes Pol Reynold Hutagalung, in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday (25/2).
