Separatist flag to see New Year
JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Irian Jaya Police Chief Brig. Gen. S.J. Wenas said here on Sunday that the separatist Morning Star flag which has been flown in the town Nabire since Dec. 1 would allow to be flown till the New Year.
He said that an agreement had been reached between community leaders for the flag to be voluntarily taken down on Jan. 1.
He claimed that the situation in the town and Irian Jaya in general was generally peaceful despite recent media reports of separatist activity.
"Just look at the people of Nabire, they're going about their activity normally without any sign of commotion," he said as quoted by Antara.
