Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison, Nadiem Makarim Files an Appeal

Jakarta, VIVA – The former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Makarim, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison in connection with the corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM).

Rejecting the verdict, Nadiem has decided to file an appeal. He stated that this step is a form of struggle.

“I will certainly continue to fight. For my children, for my family, and for the entire nation of Indonesia which I still love. I will fight! I will immediately proceed with the appeal,” Nadiem said during a press conference at the Corruption Court of the Central Jakarta District Court on Tuesday, 30 June 2026.

“For the sake of truth, for the sake of the youth, for the professionals out there, and for all honest people who have been criminalised. I will not stop,” he added.

Nadiem subsequently requested prayers and support from the Indonesian public regarding the appeal process he is undertaking.

It was previously reported that the former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Makarim, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM).

In its ruling, the panel of judges declared Nadiem Makarim guilty of committing corruption in the matter.

“Therefore, we sentence the defendant to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rp1 billion, which must be paid within one month,” the Chief Judge stated while reading the verdict at the Jakarta Central Corruption Court on Tuesday, 30 June 2026.

In addition to the 10-year prison sentence, Nadiem was also ordered to pay a fine of Rp1 billion within a one-month period.

“We sentence the defendant to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rp1 billion, to be paid within 1 month and may be extended for a maximum of 1 month from the time the decision becomes legally binding,” the Chief Judge said while reading the verdict at the Jakarta Central Corruption Court on Tuesday, 30 June 2026.

If the fine is not paid, Nadiem’s assets or income will be seized and auctioned to settle the fine.

“In the event that the proceeds from the seizure and auction of assets or income are insufficient or cannot be implemented, the unpaid fine shall be replaced by an additional prison sentence of 190 days,” he concluded.
