Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison, Nadiem Makarim Files an Appeal

Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Mendikbudristek), Nadiem Makarim, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison in a corruption case concerning the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM). Refusing to accept the ruling, Nadiem has decided to file an appeal, describing the move as a form of struggle. ‘I will certainly continue to fight. For my children, for my family, for the entire nation of Indonesia that I still love. I will fight! I will immediately file an appeal,’ Nadiem stated during a press conference at the Corruption Court in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, 30 June 2026. He added, ‘For the sake of truth, for the young people, for the professionals out there, for all honest people who are criminalised. I will not stop.’ Nadiem also requested prayers and support from the Indonesian public for the appeal process he is about to undertake. The panel of judges at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court declared Nadiem Makarim guilty of corruption. In addition to the 10-year prison sentence, the court imposed a fine of Rp1 billion. The ruling stated that if the fine is not paid, it will be replaced by an additional 190 days of imprisonment.
