Sendang Wonosari and the Colourful Hoses

Behind the Imogiri hills in Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region, lies a place called Dusun Kalidadap I, Selopamioro Village, Imogiri District. At first glance, the area resembles typical hill country, but a unique sight emerges upon closer inspection. Hundreds of colourful plastic hoses stretch across the terrain, following the course of a dry ditch. These hoses originate from a large spring named Sendang Wonosari. For decades, the spring has been a source of life, supplying clean water to the surrounding community. Its importance is particularly felt during prolonged dry seasons, such as the recent one caused by the El Niño phenomenon. Water from Sendang Wonosari is collected in a concrete basin measuring roughly 5 by 5 metres. From the edge of this basin, hundreds of hose ends hang down, some weighed down with large limestone rocks to keep them submerged. It is these colourful hoses that channel the water directly to residents’ homes.
