Senate Condemns Healthcare Workers for Insulting BPJS Patient

The alleged incident of healthcare workers insulting BPJS patient Yurizal Tri Chaerawan has drawn condemnation from members of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI). Legislators from various factions are urging the Ministry of Health to investigate the case.

The case came to light after Yurizal Tri Chaerawan’s story went viral on social media. On 22 July 2026, via his Threads account @yurizaltrich, he complained about waiting eight hours for an inpatient room. In his post, he did not name the hospital where he was being treated. Instead of receiving sympathy, the post was flooded with insulting comments. Some accounts even suggested he move to the mortuary to get a room faster. Other comments made light of serious illness and self-harm. Several accounts that wrote these comments are suspected to belong to doctors, nurses, or other healthcare workers based on their social media profiles, though their identities have not been fully verified. The discussion widened after Yurizal reportedly passed away on 31 July 2026.

Deputy Chairman of the DPR’s Commission IX, Yahya Zaini, criticised the healthcare workers suspected of insulting the BPJS patient. He urged an investigation into the hospital and the unempathetic staff. Yahya expressed his condolences and stressed that medical personnel must provide the best service to all patients, including BPJS Kesehatan participants. He noted that the long wait for treatment indicated poor hospital service. Yahya called on the Ministry of Health to issue a stern warning to the healthcare workers involved, adding that BPJS patients are often sidelined by hospitals. He requested the ministry conduct an open investigation into the hospital in question and provide education to medical staff on ethics and empathy.

Deputy Chairman of Commission IX, Charles Honoris, also expressed concern and called for sanctions against the healthcare workers if ethical violations are proven. He extended his condolences and stated that every patient deserves to be treated with respect and empathy. He urged the relevant professional organisations and institutions to conduct an objective examination and impose sanctions if necessary. Honoris highlighted that Indonesia still faces fundamental problems in its healthcare system, including a shortage of facilities, beds, and health workers in many regions. He said the government must prioritise the state budget to strengthen healthcare services that are directly felt by the public.

NasDem Party DPP Chair and Commission IX member Irma Suryani Chaniago also responded to the incident, calling the involved individuals immoral.
