SEMARANG: The Semarang-based Diponegoro University's center
for environment is scheduled to hold a seminar on environment and
sustainable development next week.

The seminar will be held in a bid to remind both the
government and society on the need to modify the culture and the
current perceptions to help promote the concept of sustainable
development, a statement from the university said.

Modification is urgently needed because the environmental
sector has become a global issue that determines the position of
any country in international diplomacy, the statement said.

Despite reports on improving international cooperation in
environmental management since the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de
Janeiro, the general condition of the global environment has been
declining, the statement said.

A source at the university confirmed that Indonesia had been
appointed to lead a preparatory committee for the ministerial
summit in the World Summit on Sustainable Development to be held
in September next year in South Africa. -- Antara
