Semeru Erupts and Releases Incandescent Lava While TNBTS Remains Ablaze

Mount Semeru in East Java has erupted, launching incandescent lava flows for a distance of 1.5 kilometres. This event occurred while fires are still burning within the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) region.

“Mount Semeru released incandescent lava flows with a sliding distance of 1,500 metres directed towards the southeast,” stated Liswanto, an officer at the Semeru Volcano Observation Post, in a written report.

The highest mountain on Java Island experienced the eruption in the early hours of the morning. The lava flows were directed towards the Besuk Kobokan area in the southeastern sector.

In addition to the lava flows, officials recorded nine explosions with ash column heights ranging from 300 to 800 metres above the peak, with thick grey smoke drifting towards the west.

Currently, the status of Mount Semeru remains at Level III (Alert). Authorities have urged the public to avoid all activities within 13 kilometres of the summit and to remain vigilant against the potential for pyroclastic flows andlahar floods.

Members of the public are also requested to remain alert to the potential for hot clouds (pyroclastic flows) and the threat of lahars along the river courses originating from the peak of Mount Semeru.
