Semen Gresik promotes low-carbon materials for green construction
PT Semen Gresik is promoting the use of low-carbon construction materials to support more sustainable infrastructure development amidst increasing construction demands.
The President Director of PT Semen Gresik, Gatot Mardiana, stated that the transformation towards a green industry must be achieved through the integration of environmental aspects into the production process, alongside the development of construction products and solutions.
“For Semen Gresik, the green industry is part of a business transformation to create long-term value,” said Gatot Mardiana during the Indonesia Green Building Festival (IGBF) 2024 in Surabaya, East Java, on Thursday.
Gatot noted that the company produces green cement with emission intensities up to 28 per cent lower than conventional cement. He added that the implementation of green industry practices at the Semen Gresik Rembang plant spans from the production process to product development, prioritising resource efficiency and carbon footprint reduction.
Semen Gresik is also applying circular economy principles by utilising alternative fuels, such as Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF), industrial waste, and biomass, to support more sustainable production processes.
To achieve these goals, Gatot stated that the company is collaborating with the Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI) to expand the use of environmentally friendly building materials and encourage the implementation of low-emission construction principles.
The Chairperson of the Green Building Council Indonesia, Ignesjz Kemalawarta, remarked that the implementation of green buildings requires an integrated approach encompassing policy, design, building performance, and the materials used.
She explained that the building and property sectors contribute significantly to achieving Indonesia’s 2060 net-zero emission target, necessitating innovation and collaboration across the entire industry chain to accelerate low-carbon development.
