Semarang Mayor Welcomes Thudong Monks, Champions Interfaith Tolerance
The selection of the mosque as the stopover and reception point symbolises that religious differences are not barriers, but a strong bridge to harmony in Central Java’s capital. “I wish to meet you all personally to absorb the peace brought by this journey. The presence of this delegation brings unique strength and spirit to our ‘Semarang Peace’ movement,” said Agustina in a statement on Sunday, 24 May 2026. Agustina emphasised that the monks’ global peace mission aligns with Semarang residents’ identity. Tolerance in the city is not just a slogan, but a way of life reflected in the local Warak Ngendog philosophy. The Warak Ngendog philosophy teaches that unity among Semarang’s diverse ethnicities and religions must yield tangible peace in the city. Major traditions such as Dugderan and the Ogoh-Ogoh parade are fully supported by all religious communities without exception. Semarang’s high level of tolerance awareness is due to the active role of the Interfaith Harmony Forum (FKUB), which operates inclusively at the district level. Additionally, Agustina is fully committed to maintaining safe, harmonious, and respectful social spaces, especially as Semarang faces challenges as a dynamic metropolis. Before bidding farewell to the monk delegation en route to their final destination ahead of Vesak celebrations, Agustina offered prayers for their safety. “We send them off with prayers that they remain healthy, arrive safely, and continue spreading peace,” she concluded.
