Semarang-Demak Toll Road Simultaneously Serves as Giant Sea Wall
JAKARTA - The Semarang-Demak Toll Road Section 1, Segment Sayung-Demak, currently under construction and targeted for completion in 2027, will simultaneously serve as a sea wall or Giant Sea Wall. Out of the total construction length of the Semarang-Demak Toll Road spanning 10.634 kilometres, there is a 6.7-kilometre stretch that functions as a sea wall. Thus, it becomes a toll road integrated with a 6.7-kilometre sea wall, which will impact the areas around Kaligawe to Sayung, as quoted from the official website of the Central Java Provincial Government on Monday (11/05/2026). The Semarang-Demak Toll Road Section 1 project is divided into three packages: 1A, 1B which is integrated with the sea wall, and 1C which consists of the Terboyo Retention Basin and Sriwulan Retention Basin constructions. As is known, the Semarang-Demak Toll Road Section 1 construction project consists of three packages. Package 1A has a budget of Rp2.02 trillion, Package 1B amounts to Rp6.84 trillion, and Package 1C is valued at Rp2.11 trillion. The Rp10.9 trillion value includes VAT and is contracted from 2022 until completion in 2027. The construction value is Rp10.05 trillion. The Terboyo retention basin, covering 189 hectares, can hold 6.7 million cubic metres of water, while the Sriwulan Retention Basin, covering 28 hectares, can hold 1.2 million cubic metres of water. Both retention basins are equipped with a total of 10 pumps, each with a capacity of 5 cubic metres per second. This is for flood control, not tidal flooding. The Semarang-Demak Toll Road is divided into two sections. Section 1 from Semarang to Sayung stretches 10.64 kilometres over the sea and is still in the construction phase. Meanwhile, Section 2 from Sayung to Demak spans 16.31 kilometres on land and is already operational. The construction of the Semarang-Demak Toll Road Section 1 requires a large amount of bamboo material to support the construction work. At least 10 million bamboo poles are needed to form the toll road mattress over the sea. The bamboo for this project is not just any; it also has specific criteria, namely straight bamboo with a length of 8 metres and a diameter of 8-10 centimetres.
