Semarang City Government Awaits Interior Minister's Guidance on Work From Anywhere
The Semarang City Government has confirmed that plans to implement Work From Anywhere (WFA) for Civil Servants (ASN) will be carried out selectively, while still prioritising direct services to the public. However, this policy is still awaiting official guidance from the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri). “We will follow what is decided by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Because we are under the Ministry of Home Affairs,” said the Head of the Personnel, Education, and Training Agency (BKPP) of Semarang City, Joko Hartono, after the Central Morning Roll Call and Halal Bihalal for Eid al-Fitr 1 Syawal 1447 Hijriyah at the Semarang City Hall courtyard on Monday, 30 March 2026. The Semarang City Government, he continued, will adhere to the central government’s policy on WFA implementation, while considering the characteristics of ASN work in the region, most of which requires physical presence. According to him, not all types of work can be carried out remotely or via WFA. Therefore, the Semarang City Government will apply a principle of prudence in implementing this policy. “In local government, we are the front-line servants to the community. The types of work and services require physical presence,” said Joko. Therefore, he continued, for types of work that require physical presence, they will still be present physically. His side added that during the Eid holiday period, ASN in Semarang City were given the opportunity to implement a limited WFA scheme. However, the majority of ASN still came to work due to the demands of public services that cannot be neglected. He mentioned that as of 30 March 2026, all ASN have been required to return to physical work at the office, and their attendance is strictly monitored. In addition, the Semarang City Government also ensures that ASN discipline remains a primary concern. Attendance supervision is carried out directly, including through surprise inspections (sidak), to ensure that services to the public continue to run optimally. Joko also asked the public not to worry about the WFA implementation plan. The Semarang City Government is committed to maintaining service quality, especially in sectors that directly interact with the community.
