Semarang: An Inclusive City – Easter Carnival Provides a Stage for People with Disabilities
The spirit of inclusivity built into the Semarang City Easter Carnival 2026 was realised concretely through the involvement of various community elements, including groups of people with disabilities who participated in the series of activities. At the endpoint of the Easter Carnival procession, in front of the Semarang City Hall office, the group of people with disabilities delivered a captivating dance performance. This performance was not only entertainment but also conveyed a strong message about equality and open access for everyone. The presence of people with disabilities on the carnival stage reinforces that public spaces in Semarang City are becoming increasingly inclusive. It is not just about providing space, but also giving an equal platform for expression and appreciation. Semarang City Mayor, Agustina Wilujeng, in her speech, emphasised that this activity is part of the city’s ongoing dynamics, presenting spaces for togetherness for the entire community. “This activity is part of the city’s ongoing life, providing space for the community to meet and share happiness in public spaces,” she stated. Furthermore, she underlined that the city’s strength is born from diversity managed well. “Often we think togetherness arises from similarity. In fact, it is because of differences that togetherness becomes strong and meaningful,” she asserted. This year’s Easter Carnival also serves as a reflection that city development is not only about infrastructure, but also about how social spaces are built to embrace all layers of society fairly and equally. Amid the festive celebrations, the message of inclusivity speaks most loudly that an advanced city is not only one that grows physically, but one that ensures every citizen is present, visible, and valued. From the confident steps of people with disabilities performing in public spaces, Semarang City affirms one thing: equality is not just discourse, but a practice continuously lived together.
